An Ammonia Simulator with Honeywell, based on the UniSim Dynamics, was installed in the Fertinitro plant with the purpose of implanting and developing a training program for operators and for technicians on the control panel to contribute and elevate the reliability of the operational process of ammonia reproduction.
With the use of the Honeywell Simulator and once the simulation workshops are completed, the operators will have the capability of starting the plant from the initial phase until it covers 100% start up, a highly demanding process. Equally, they will be able to develop techniques and skills to stop the plant in a progressive and safe way, until it is safe and ready to start back up, without having the equipment suffer damages or imperfections.
The Operators from the control panel can practice and analyze errors in a virtual manner and obtain results from the simulator with a 99% certainty. The new Simulator also contains the logic from the existing Hologica Protection System in the Ammonia plant, which permits, in cases of activation of any of the logic situations, the operator can maneuver and take corrective decisions from that moment with precision.
Another advantage of the Simulator is that it permits the evaluation of damages simulated in the equipment of the plant, of which approximately 15 have already been specified, like the actions needed to normalize the plant to a secure operating condition.
Additionally, it can simulate process errors, open or closed instruments, or complete stop of the process, for example. As well, it can simulate all actions that an operator can perform in his/her area.
For ammonia plants in general, it was proved that the technology can save more than USD 4 Million/yr, based on a production of 1 million tonnes per year of ammonia.
